When you meet us, you’ll notice we aren’t staff – we are a TEAM. From our veterinarians, client care representatives, veterinary technicians and assistants to our groomers and lodging assistants, we are all dedicated to making lives better for both pets and people. Dr. Andrea Crum, Lead Doctor/Veterinarian
Originally from Elizabethtown, Kentucky, Andrea decided to become a veterinarian at the young age of five years old. After graduating from high school, she obtained a Biochemistry degree from Western Kentucky University, continued her education at Auburn University, and in 2008, graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Degree in Veterinary Medicine. Andrea has developed an appreciation for all aspects of veterinary medicine, but has a particular interest in internal medicine and instituting the most up to date and advanced care possible. She is amazed by the human-animal bond and is grateful to be a part of keeping that bond strong as long as possible. Andrea now lives in Sellersburg, Indiana with her husband, Ryan, her daughter, Claire and son, Malcolm. Her furry family members include Emmit, a 13 year old terrier mix and Milhouse, an 8 year old Yorkipoo, and recently adopted beautiful beagle Jolene. In her spare time, Andrea loves spending time with her family.
Dr. Piper Hays, CVSMT, Veterinarian
Dr. Hays grew up in Phoenix, Arizona. After finishing undergraduate school at the University of Arizona, she moved to the midwest to attend Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine. She completed veterinary school in May 1995 and started at Eastside in June 1995. Aspects of veterinary medicine that are of special interest to Dr. Hays are feline and canine geriatric medicine, force free behavior/training and integrative methods for pain management and mobility. Most recently, she has completed certification in Veterinary Spinal Manipulative Therapy for dogs and horses and become a member of the College of Animal Chiropractic.
Outside of work, Dr. Hays trains and competes in agility with her own dogs, enjoys flower gardening, birding, crocheting, sewing and other crafty things. Currently, she and husband Gary have 5 dogs, 7 cats and one very old rooster.
Dr. Lisa Powell, Veterinarian
Dr. Lisa Powell is a graduate of Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine. In 2000, Dr. Powell brought her warm caring style and interest in surgery to Eastside Animal Hospital. Dr. Powell believes that the great teamwork at Eastside Animal Hospital gives your pet the best care possible. “We have one goal and that is to provide the best care and compassion for you and your pets.” Dr. Powell is an avid sports fan and a fantasy football player. Her home bleeds (Nebraska) red and (Kentucky) blue! She and her wife, Kelly, are empty nesters now that daughters Olivia and Caroline have flown. Animal family members include feline friend Dexter and poodle crew Opi, Nil, and Ricky Bobby.
Dr. Amy Lutgen, Veterinarian
Dr. Amy Lutgen is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin school of Veterinary Medicine. She has been with Eastside Animal Hospital since her graduation in 2005. One of Dr. Lutgen’s favorite parts of veterinary medicine is seeing the amazing bond people have with their animals and helping people keep their animals healthy so that they can enjoy each other’s companionship for as long as possible. She also enjoys dentistry and educating people on the importance of dental health in their pets.
Outside of work Dr. Lutgen enjoys spending time with her husband and two young children Kendall and Brielle. They enjoy traveling together, reading books, and hiking with their three dogs. They are also looking forward to welcoming a baby boy to their family in the spring ’17.
Dr. Frances Dungan, Veterinarian
Dr. Frances Dungan grew up in Fort Thomas, Kentucky. After earning a degree from the University of Kentucky, she completed her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Purdue University. One of Dr. Dungan’s favorite aspects of veterinary medicine is educating clients on how to best care for their pet. It’s this passion that makes Dr. Dungan a perfect fit for Eastside Animal Hospital. Dr. Dungan has a special interest in companion animal dentistry and dermatology. Dr. Dungan is part of the dermatology speaker’s bureau and travels locally to educate other veterinarians on how to successfully help furry friend who have skin problems. Dr. Dungan lives in Louisville with her husband, Bryant and their canine friend, Jerome. Outside of work, Dr. Dungan enjoys playing tennis, cooking, and hiking.
Dr. Sarah Shea Gatewood, Veterinarian
Dr. Sarah Shea Gatewood was born and raised in Frankfort, KY. She has loved animals and insects ever since she could first walk. After completing a Bachelor’s degree in biology at the University of Kentucky, she attended Auburn University for her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine. For her, the best part of being a veterinarian is helping people by caring for their pets. She believes it is important to practice with compassion and integrity to help those animals who cannot speak for themselves. Her particular passion lies in ultrasonography and soft tissue surgery. When she is not working, she loves spending time outdoors and hanging with her golden retriever Bentley and her family. Her other leisurely activities include riding horses, reading, wake boarding and surfing.
Dr. Laura Strong, Medical Director Emeritus
Dr. Laura Strong has always had a passion for the care and companionship of animals. When she was in the 6th grade, she decided to become a veterinarian, and with the support and encouragement from her family, she pursued that dream. Dr. Strong fell in love with the Eastside community when she began working at the hospital during her high school years. Dr. Strong graduated from the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1987. In 1988, she joined the practice and her uncle, founding veterinarian James E. Howard, DVM. As the past medical director and visionary for Eastside Animal Hospital, Dr. Strong’s goal for Eastside was to create a space where lives were made better for pets, people, and team members. Her loves (outside the practice) include spending time with her husband, David, their son and daughter in law, Michael and Caroline, and daughter Sarah. Her animal companions are faithful Doberman Argo, Whippet Sonni, Dachshund Jaco, fearless feline- friend One, horses Harley, Rocket, and Stuart. Grand-dog Olive and Grand cat Hendrix are very much enjoyed too!
Jennifer Easterling, Practice Manager
Jennifer comes to us from Elizabethtown, KY– yes, the drive is worth it! Although, born and raised in Frankfort, KY, she has spent the last 15 years working for the United States Army Veterinary Corps as a civilian; until joining us here, this past summer. This has afforded her the opportunity to travel across the United States helping animals as well as people from all over the world. Her favorite thing about her job is being able to help the animals and thereby helping their humans, “The human-animal bond is a powerful thing to witness, and I am honored to be a part of it.”
Outside of work Jen’s time is spent cheering her son on at soccer games or helping him to prepare for his academic goals. College visits will be in the very near future for them, and time is of the essence. Recently engaged, Jen has now added planning a wedding to her ever growing “to-do” list, in addition to laying plans for her parent’s 50th anniversary party. Needless to say, when downtime is available, her animals are first in line for some one-on-one relaxation time.
Katie H., Lodging Manager
Katie, a native of Northern Michigan, joined the EAH team in 2011. In her current role is Lodging Manager Katie can often be found buzzing around making sure that our furry guests needs are met. When not supervising in lodging to create safety and creature comfort, Katie pitches in as a Veterinary Assistant. She has an Associate’s degree in Science that she received after moving to the Louisville area.
Katie enjoys the camaraderie and positive energy at EAH. Helping people and pets inspires Katie and she enjoys being able to do this every day. Katie lives with her boyfriend, Daniel, her 2 dogs, JoJo and Taco and her cat, Calvin.
Joann T., Office Manager
Joann has been a loyal part of the Eastside family for over 25 years. She enjoys being a part of a team that works together to provide owners and their pets the highest level of communication and care possible. Outside of work she enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband Kenny, children and grandchildren.
Natalie H., Inventory Manager
Natalie has been a member of our patient care team since July 2011. She graduated from the veterinary technology program at Brown Mackie College in 2013. Natalie has spent most of her time in patient care but recently took over the Inventory Manager position. Her day is spent making sure we have the many supplies and products we need to care for and heal our patients. Natalie has always had a passion for animals and enjoys being able to work with them here at Eastside. When Natalie isn’t at Eastside Animal Hospital, she enjoys spending time with her husband Dustin, and their new son Cade. Natalie also has two furry friends at home, Eleanor the beagle and Bugsy the cat.
Bethaney S., RVT
Bethaney has been a member of the Eastside patient care team since May 2015. She is a graduate of International Business College-Vet Tech Institute where she received an Associate Degree in Applied Science in Veterinary Technology. Bethaney spends a majority of her time in surgery and treatment areas and she is also the safety coordinator for the hospital. As the safety coordinator, Bethaney works very hard to create a hazard free place for pets and people. When Bethaney is not at Eastside she enjoys hiking and camping, crafting, and spending time with her family. Bethaney lives in Scottsburg with her husband, William, and two dachshund fur-kids: Lilly, Dixie, and feline friend Arizona.
Christen D., RVT
Christen’s passion for animals started at a young age, and she always knew she wanted a career where she could help them. In July of 2015 Christen graduated as a vet tech from Brown Mackie College-Louisville. She completed her externship for school here at Eastside and became an employee after graduation. Her main duties here are assisting in surgery and promoting the use and education of the therapy laser. She loves working at Eastside for the great teamwork and diverse cases. In her free time she loves to spend it outdoors with her husband, Aaron, and toy poodle, Daisy. She also likes to take care of her fish, P. Sherman, and cat, Bagheera.
Kelly D., Nutritional Counselor
Kelly joined the Eastside team as a Veterinary Assistant in 2016 after graduating from Western Kentucky University and returning to Louisville. She studied Biology and Spanish and has always had a passion for animals! Kelly is as a certified pet Nutritional Counselor. She loves being able to work with animals daily at EAH and she enjoys helping to provide pet family members with excellent healthcare. She loves learning about veterinary medicine and looks forward to continually learning new things at EAH. In her free time, Kelly enjoys spending time with her family, their two new fluffy puppies, and her friends.
Kelsey R., Groomer
Kelsey started her pet care interest at Eastside Animal Hospital in 2016. She worked as a vet assistant for over a year and, although still enjoying that position, she decided to further her education to become a pet stylist. She welcomes both dogs and cats to be groomed as she is dog and cat certified through Nash Academy of Animal Arts.
Her hobbies include hiking with her two dogs, going for long drives, and enjoying an easy night in. She is fully invested in making pets look and feel their best. Seeing the transformation to a fresh, clean, and happy pet is what it’s about.
A few aspirations with her new education include: artistic styling with pet hair color, therapeutic grooms for shelter pets, and cat friendly grooming techniques.
With Kelsey’s interest of animal behavior and fear free techniques, her goal is to make your pet feel safe during their makeover. We share her excitement in making your furry friends look and feel their best!
