Microchipping is a safe, easy, and permanent way veterinarians and shelters can identify pets and return them to their owners. When your pet is microchipped, a veterinarian uses a hypodermic needle to safely inject a chip under your pet’s skin. No anesthesia or surgery is required for insertion. Typically, it is inserted at the back of the neck between the shoulder blades. This chip contains a unique identification number and is activated when a scanner, which puts out radio waves, is passed over the area. During its activation, the chip transmits the information stored on it to the scanner, which then displays your pet’s unique identification number. Once a veterinarian or shelter attendant enters the number into a database, your information will pop up and you will be contacted. It is important to note that the microchip is only useful if you properly register it and keep the information current.
